Mostly forested valley of the Saco River from Bartlett north to Crawford Notch Sunny, 62F, light breeze Parked at Sawyer River trailhead, walked about a mile up Sawyer River road then back down and across highway, around beaver pond the the river and back to the trailhead.
Forest along Sawyer River road mostly beech, sugar maple, white birch, yellow birch, ash and hemlock, with some oak and pine down near hwy 302. Gray birch with some poplar and red maple grow around the beaver pond, though the beaver are selectively removing the poplar and maple. Leaves are emerging on sugar maple, buds opening on white birch. No snow, forest floor dry, rivers low but beaver dam recently maintained and pond full. Little bird activity along Sawyer River road, more along highway and around pond.
Canada Goose 2   Pair in beaver pond
Wood Duck 1   Male flushed from pond, mostly dark with thin white marks on head and perhaps wings. Wings made whistling sound.
Common Merganser 1   Male flushed from beaver pond, also seen floating down river.
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 2   Tapping in ash, calling.
Hairy Woodpecker 1   Calling along Sawyer River road

Blue-headed Vireo 1   Singing in treetops near the trailhead. Warbler-sized bird with grayish head, greenish upperparts, yellowish flanks, pale underparts and prominent wingbars. Distinctive song - short loud 1-3 note phrases, med-low pitched and well-separated
Blue Jay 4   Mostly around beaver pond
American Crow 1   Flew by
Black-capped Chickadee 4   A couple singing

Palm Warbler 1   Foraging in understory bushes and on ground around beaver pond.
Chipping Sparrow 2   Singing in low brushy woods along pond. Trill seemed too dry and uniform for junco.
